On Thursday night, I was treated to free tickets to see The Pain and the Itch at Playwrights Horizons. It was an uncomfortably funny look at a family with lots of neurosis and holier-than-thou attitudes about their lives. The wonderful Jayne Howdyshell was hysterical as the Mom. The plot had twists and turns with a truly surprising ending. Free tickets are always good and usually encourages me to like a production more than I should, but in this case, I would have liked it quite a lot even if I had to pay for it myself.
(Ethan Hawke was in the audience and spent the intermission making out with his girlfriend. Ew.)
