I was in the business office at the Met the day they learned of the $25,000,000 unrestricted gift from Mercedes Bass. It was a beautiful day. Mrs. Bass said, "...I had a dream of making a difference and I hope tonight, with our gift, we have and I hope everyone in this room will follow in our footsteps, come forward and add your name to our name, and...we want everyone to support this house to the best of their capabilities..." Wouldn't it be something if everyone had this attitude (and not just about opera)?
