Tonight: Xanadu on Broadway

At 4:30 this afternoon, a co-worker stopped by and offered me a comp ticket to Xanadu. Of course, I took it - you know anything that involves a ticket is my personal xanadu! Anyway, everybody was in tonight and I had just as much fun as when I saw it in previews way back in July. Every minute is a blast. Mary Testa added a line at the end. Tony Roberts, as Zeus, said, "That was short and happy." She, as Melpomene, replied, "Short and happy? Next door at Gypsy, Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter."

On the bus ride home, some ladies were studying their Sunday in the Park with George Playbills. A man sitting across from them asked them if they liked it. They both did very much, exclaiming that it was "brilliant!" He proceeded to be grumpy about the show, stating that it's "just one set and the actors play their own instruments." The ladies looked at each other, and one replied, "Well, Sondheim's not for everybody." True that, lady, but I'm pretty sure that old dude is stuck in last season.

"Just one set and the actors play their own instruments"?

Did he perhaps mean Company? Or Sweeney Todd? Cuz John Doyle doesn't direct Sunday, and nobody in the cast plays an instrument.

I mean, if you're going to be snarky, get the show right, y'know what I'm sayin'?

Sarah, I couldn't believe the size of that cello Jenna Russell played in Sunday In The Park With Georoge, but Daniel Evans rocked on the flute!

Was Xanadu even better the second time around?

Chris - I was just shaking my head. Another woman piped up that he should see Jersey Boys. Oy.

Steve - It was my third time! I loved it all three times and I think I'll go again, even if I have to actually pay for it.

Xanadu is an amazing show. The music is so good and the book (script) to it is really entertaining too. I have only seen it once, though.

I sat on the stage for it, and that is really some experience, which is a lot of fun! Anyone who loves Xanadu should definetely sit on stage. It feels like you are actually part of the show being up there, it's cool!

Sarah, it's great living vicariously through your adventures! I'd like to see Xanadu sometime. It sounds like fun and I'm a big Annie Hall fan, so I'd really like to see Tony Roberts!

I love how Mary Testa improvises that line... When I saw it, the kids at SPRING AWAKENING hadn't even gotten to first base (which was fun to explain to my 7-year-old). GYPSY line is just as good! Go, Mary!
