Did you know I was born in Hawaii?

It's so hot and humid in Manhattan today it makes me wish I was in a place where it's good to be hot and humid - Hawaii. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Tripler Hospital near Pearl Harbor. We lived at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. I was only there a couple of years. Mom and I went to stay with Aunt Beth in Cotulla, Texas, while Daddy went to Viet Nam. But I've always felt special because I was born in Hawaii and of course, I had great baby pictures. I've been to Hawaii a couple of wonderful times. In fact, when I was contemplating leaving my life in San Antonio, Honolulu was on my short list. You know New York City won that contest, but I could go back to Hawaii a million visits if money and time permitted. Anyway, growing up I listened to Mom & Dad's vinyl album of Blue Hawaii over and over and watched the movie every time it came on tv. I was certain that our life in Hawaii must have been exactly like that. You know I own that movie now. I LOVE ELVIS. Yes, that's true. I've even been to Graceland. The funny part is that I never thought much about my favorite Broadway Diva playing Elvis' mom in Blue Hawaii. Well, back then, and I know it's shocking, I didn't know Angela Lansbury except for this movie, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and later Murder, She Wrote, much less know that she was a Broadway Goddess. She was only 36 years old and here she was playing 26 year old Elvis' mom. Oh well, she's funny in the movie...but this is one I watch for Elvis.

I did not know you were born in Hawaii! That's very cool. I'd love to go there sometime. And of course you are special, for more reasons than being born in Hawaii! Btw, have you ever read "Paradise Park" by Allegra Goodman? She grew up in Hawaii and the novel takes place there. I'm a fan of Hawaii-themed novels. I also love James Michener's "Hawaii." (Ok, those are the only two I've actually read.)

And how's this for serendipity? I'm actually in Hawaii as I write this enjoying the sound of the waves crashing upon the shore, right outside my fabulous hotel room. Nice to spend a day in paradise - given how wonderful you are, I should not be surprised you'd be from here.
